Established in September 1985 by Gerrit Jan Mulder, one of the few qualified scale fitters in the trade, Scales Incorporated was founded to provide better service and higher-quality products within the weighing equipment industry.
Mulder, now Founder and CFO, began his career at SA Scale Company (1981–1985), where he passed his trade test with exemption. Driven by his passion for service and recognizing a need for competitive offerings, he established Scales Incorporated on the principles of honesty, reliability, and strong customer relationships.
In 1993, Arthur Van Wyk (now CEO) joined the business, bringing an N6 Mechanical Engineering qualification and millwright experience from SA Railways. His contribution helped transition Scales Incorporated from a predominantly mechanical focus to electronic product offerings. This shift also marked the start of in-house product design, welding, and manufacturing, expanding the company’s reach into concrete, agriculture, and retail industries.
By 1995, Scales Incorporated became SABS (now SANAS) accredited, and in 2017 the company was recognized with an award for maintaining accreditation status for over 20 years.
From 1996 onwards, Scales Incorporated steadily expanded its international partnerships:
- 1996 – Imported mechanical bakery scales from Sri Lanka.
- 1997 – Secured agency with Campesa (Barcelona) and began exporting products. Also awarded the sole contract for BMI electronic scale distribution in the Western Cape.
- 2002 – Entered Asian markets with Excell scales from Taiwan and partnered with Rinstrum Australia, a relationship that continues today.
- 2003 – Expanded imports from Singapore, focusing on platforms and scales.
- 2006 – Arthur Van Wyk (Jnr) (Business Economics graduate) joined to lead the technical department.
- 2009 – Began importing industrial controllers from Italy.
- 2012 – Expanded with imports from Wisconsin, USA, and welcomed Albert Mulder (Mega-Tronics Programming graduate), enhancing focus on pioneering technologies.
Today, Scales Incorporated remains committed to service excellence, being first-to-market with new technologies, and advancing the automation of weighing solutions.
The company is jointly owned by Gerrit Mulder, Arthur J Van Wyk, Arthur Van Wyk (Jnr), and Albert Mulder. Operations run with a fleet of 11 service vehicles and 31 employees, continuing the legacy of innovation and reliability that began in 1985.
